The Epipen

EpiPen is used to treat severe allergic reactions to insect stings, bites and foods. Epinephrine is a chemical which narrows blood vessels and opens airways in the lungs. The standard adult dose in 0.3mg (as 0.3ml of 1:1000 adrenaline), but there are specific paediatric pens which contain a dose of 0.15mg (EpiPen JuniorĀ®).

The EpiPenĀ® auto-injector is a disposable drug delivery system featuring spring activation and a concealed needle. It is designed for self-administration of epinephrine in acute allergic emergencies (anaphylaxis).

The use of an EPIPEN or similar auto injector to administer Epinephrine (Adrenaline) in an anaphylactic emergency by anyone, even without qualifications or training, is permitted under the Prescriptipon Only Medicines (Human Use) Order 1997, for the purpose of saving life.
